Muhammad Asad -no doubt- is one of the most distinctive and controversial personalities of recent times. This is more than ever because of his translation and interpretation of holy Koran. This article aims to examine his point of view within the context of the verses of Quran (Al-Maeda 5/33-34) relevant to the crime of brigandage (banditry). Asad has introduced us to a brand-new interpretation of these verses; he rejects the meaning that all Muslim scholars have accepted since the beginning, on the grounds of some arguments of his own -particularly based on some features of Arabic language. He has a sociological approach to these verses which makes them irrelevant of any crime and its punishment in Islamic law. By examining his arguments, we came to the conclusion that these arguments are not strong enough to admit that Asad has right on this side. |
