Konstantinopolis'in saray atölyelerinde üretilen lüks cam objelerle, Bizans'ın köklü cam yapım teknikleri ve sırları, Doğu Akdeniz ticaretini tek elinde bulunduran İtalyan şehir devletleri kanalıyla Venedik'e taşınır. While the last centuries of Byzantine is known as a period during which the empire lost its economic and political power, the period has been accompanied with a revival and change in cultural and political sense. During the period, the policies maintained by Byzantium for financial and political concerns brought the empire closer to the Eastern and Western cultures. Also, the empire thus became a transit route between these two different cultures both in geographical and cultural sense. The diplomatic and cultural relations that developed between the Empire and Venice and Genoa in the West and the Islamic and Turkish states in the East contributed to the emergence of new habits on glassworks as well as in other forms of art. The luxurious glass objects produced in the palace glasshouses in Constantinople and well-established techniques and secrets of glass making in Byzantine were carried to Venice through Italian city states that monopolized over the trade in Eastern Mediterranean. Likewise, the Crusaders produced glass objects which have Islamic form but decorated with depictions from Christianity. Through excavation findings, it is understood that the Islamic states ruling in Syria and Egypt during the period played an important role in glass production and trade at the time. Especially, the glass objects produced in Syria are known to have been exported to Anatolia. The fact that imitations of the Islamic style have been found in layers of Byzantine should lead one to the interpretation that this has been a consequence of cultural exchange.

By the beginning of the 19th Century, the Aegean region of Turkey had already become the leading manufacturer of raw cotton, with the increased cultivation of cotton in the countryside. As a result, the coastal port city of Izmir was also fast becoming the center of cotton thread production. During this exciting era, many cotton thread and cloth mills sprang up in the outskirts of the city, financed by European investors, around the 1800's. These mills aimed at the national-local market and were in fierce competition with the foreign textile imports, especially with the Indian and English manufactures. The Izmir Oriental Industries Company, Textile Mill (est.in 1893) was one of those mills which had a very important place in the textiles industry of the time, and secured itself a strong position, both in national and international markets.Because of the intensity of many centers of weaving centers all around the Black Sea region of Turkey, the whole region at that time had already became a very important market for yearly consumption of cotton thread and cloths for the Aegean textile mills. The fine cotton thread, used videly in the manufacture of the Black Sea type of futa, alaca, peştamal and cloth weavings was produced partly by the Istanbul Yedikule mills and partly by the İzmir Oriental Industries Company Textile Mill and by local and foreign tradesmen. In 1924, in order to secure it's place firmly among the manufacturers of cotton thread aimed at the Black Sea region, The Izmir Oriental Industries Company Textile Mill decided to embark on a kind of a ‘market research and evaluation survey expedition' of the Black Sea region. At the end of this long survey, a very detailed report was prepared, giving many crucial details of the cotton textile market situation around the whole region. This article is based on this historical report, which provides valuable information on the names and locations of the many tradesmen, involved in the textile business, their yearly consumption of cotton thread and cloth, the thread and textile manufactures that are traded and about the economical and social conditions of the many Black Sea towns and cities at the time, such as Trabzon, Rize, Giresun, Samsun, İnebolu ve Kastamonu after the First World War. The copy of the original document in Ottoman Turkish is presented with the article, together with it's modern Turkish translation.

Son bölümde ise, mektubun anlatım tekniği olarak bu metinlere nasıl katkıda bulunduğu üzerinde durulacaktır Traditional literary criticism has defined epistle as a genre used for improvement of fiction in a narrative for a long time, in European literature. However, in the 1970s academic studies, benefiting from postmodern and feminist critical approaches, began to redefine epistolary novels that were written during the eighteenth century as a sub-genre because these texts play a conciliatory role between dichotomies such as self-other and public-private. In Turkish literature, epistle genre has a long-established past, which passed many transformations from Ottoman literature to modern literature. In this study, functions of epistolary form was searched through short stories, written during the Tanzimat period. In the first part, academic studies in the light of postmodern and feminist critical approaches, focusing on epistolary novels in European literature were discussed. In the second part, various short stories, written during the Tanzimat period, were analysed according to these critical approaches. They were suggested as proto-feminist texts because of discussing concepts such as love, marriage in the light of the woman question. Therefore, it was claimed that these texts may be considered as alternative historical narratives. Lastly, the stylistic function of this genre to these texts was questioned in the article.
