Antakya, a city on the Turkish border with Syria, has in contrast to many cities in Turkey, been successful historically in protecting its plurality and in this form it exhibits a goodexampleofmulticulturalism.Howeverthis is anauthentic examplepeculiartoAntakya. The paper tries to put forth that the core of Antakya's multiculturalism today is comprised of the intermingling of component of the Ottoman old "millet" system with elements of modernization process implemented during the Republican period. Thus the paper asserts that it is not possible to understand how this authentic culture within the border field of a Unitarian Nation State has continued without looking at the different historical periods that reveal the reciprocal relationship between local, national and global. In this context the impacts of Ottomanist governance and of Kemalism; of the debates about the entrance into the E.U. as well as the recent crisis in Syria on inter-ethnic relations and the identification processes in Antakya are being scrutinized.

KESER, Ulvi
The island of Cyprus is, throughout the history, supposed and believed to be that of the immigration and that of the issues. Taking a glance at the last century, it is obviously seenthat, eventhoughthe islandseems to be out ofthe wars andthe struggles insomepoints, the island itself just takes a place in the very midst of those above-mentioned struggles, disputes and the conflicts. Especially starting from the WWI, the island occupies a very unusual place both in the conflict of interest and the struggles of the island-centered and various conflicts surrounding Cyprus, and in addition to the Enosis conflict caused by the Greek Cypriots, the efforts for the annexation of the island to Greece, and the British policy towards Greece all increase the problems more and more. Considering the position of the island especially starting from April 1, 1955 on which Greek Cypriot terrorist organization named EOKA started terrorist activities not only against British, and Turkish Cypriots but also against Greek Cypriot ones up to August 16, 1960 on which the Republic of Cyprus was founded on the guarantee of the UK, Turkey and Greece, the island spent a long way of atrocity and bloodyshed period causing the death of a good many innocent persons on the island. Turkish Cypriots trying to getrid of the atrocity committed against themselves have also established some underground organizations such as Volkan, 9 Eylül (9th September symbolizing the salvation of Nicosia as well as that of Izmir), and Türk Mukavemet Teşkilatı (Turkish Resistance Organization) but except the last one, all the efforts have come to an end with failure since EOKA was backed by Greece and donated by the well-trained and experienced military personnel. Despite the fact that Republic of Cyprus has been founded, Greek Cypriot attacks against the Turkish people continue and the republic comes to an end with a tragic end, that is to say, with Bloody Christmas. As the first and the last president of Republic of Cyprus, and Archbishop Makarios frankly declared, Republic of Cyprus seemed to be just a springing point towards the annexation of the island to Greece at long last. In this scientific study, it is aimed, in priority, starting from the first day of 1963, to focus on the political developments and the traps created byMakarios himself up to the end of 1963 in the light of the US documents. Ayrıca Kıbrıslı Rumların adayı Yunanlaştırmaya yönelik Enosis girişimleri yanınnda İngilizlerin Yunanistan'a yönelik politikası da ada etrafındaki sorunları kat be kat artırır.

Sir Winston Churchill, a statesman who became legendary with his policies during the World War II, left premiership to Anthony Eden in 1955 but took a close interest in British politics for the rest of his life. Churchill, who followed every action closely even during his retirement span, was welcome with great interest in the countries he visited. In this period, while the issues like Soviet threat and Middle East was keeping the global agenda busy, Cyprus Question played an influential role in Turkish-Greek-British relationships. In this article, W. Churchill's unofficial visit to Turkey which was initially headed towards Greece and Greek islands and then suddenly headed to Turkey in the summer months of 1959 were evaluated within the context of Cyprus Question on the basis of British archive documents, media and relevant sources.

The Greek Cypriots have put forward the idea of the annexation of the island to Greece as a reflection of new order after World War II. Despite the sensitivity of relations of the Turkish and British friendship, Greek government has shown intensive diplomatic activities to include the territory of Cyprus by moving the issue to the UN. Thanks to these studies, the Greek government has aimed to reach a political and legal gains, but the Greek government could not completely persuade the international community and did not reach the desired result in the UN negotiations. Being less number of Turks living on the island, to be deprived of the economic and political entity and Turkey's indifference to Cyprus case because of various reasons have strengthened the hand of the Greeks in the Cyprus Events of 1954.
